1. Introduction
The month of September 2009 marked a significant milestone for Neftaly Charity in its partnership with the Free State Office of the Premier. This collaboration was designed to strengthen community development initiatives, promote social cohesion, and provide direct support to vulnerable groups across the province.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to building a province where opportunities are accessible to all, and where sustainable development is achieved through cooperation between government, civil society, and local communities.
2. Key Achievements
2.1 Youth Development
- Launched skills training workshops in Bloemfontein and QwaQwa, benefiting over 320 young people.
- Introduced mentorship programmes pairing young graduates with professionals in business, government, and NGOs.
- Facilitated youth dialogues on active citizenship, leadership, and social responsibility.
2.2 Poverty Alleviation and Community Support
- Distributed food parcels to more than 450 households in rural and peri-urban areas.
- Provided school uniforms and learning materials to 200 learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Supported community gardens in Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu to strengthen food security initiatives.
2.3 Capacity Building and Training
- Conducted training sessions for 45 community-based organisations (CBOs) on governance, financial management, and project sustainability.
- Hosted a leadership development seminar with local chiefs, councillors, and ward committees to enhance collaboration and accountability.
2.4 Health and Wellness
- Partnered with the Department of Health to roll out HIV & AIDS awareness campaigns, reaching approximately 7,000 people through schools, clinics, and community halls.
- Facilitated mobile wellness clinics providing basic check-ups, TB screening, and counseling in under-served areas.
3. Challenges
Despite significant progress, several challenges were encountered:
- Limited funding restricted the scaling up of successful pilot projects.
- Transport and logistics hindered the timely delivery of services in remote communities.
- High unemployment rates continue to put pressure on community development initiatives.
4. Strategic Way Forward
To address these challenges and strengthen the partnership, Neftaly Charity will:
- Advocate for increased investment from both public and private partners.
- Expand partnerships with local businesses to promote employment creation and skills transfer.
- Strengthen monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure accountability and impact measurement.
- Continue fostering collaboration between government, NGOs, and communities to maximize resources and avoid duplication.
5. Conclusion
The Neftaly–Free State Office of the Premier partnership has already made a positive impact in September 2009, uplifting vulnerable communities and creating pathways for sustainable development. With continued commitment and resource mobilization, this collaboration will play a pivotal role in building a more inclusive and empowered Free State Province.
