Neftaly Charity – May 1991
Neftaly–State Diamond Trader Partnership
Report by: Chief Development Officer, Neftaly

1. Executive Summary

May 1991 marked a pivotal moment in Neftaly’s community development journey with the formalization of our partnership with State Diamond Trader (SDT). This collaboration was designed to combine Neftaly’s grassroots social impact expertise with SDT’s market influence and resources, creating a sustainable pathway for social change in mining communities and beyond.

Our shared vision:

  • To foster economic empowerment in historically disadvantaged mining areas.
  • To channel diamond industry revenue into education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects.
  • To set a benchmark for ethical trade partnerships that prioritize community well-being.

2. Partnership Objectives

The Neftaly–SDT agreement was built on three pillars:

  1. Community Investment – Allocating a percentage of SDT trading profits directly into Neftaly-managed development funds.
  2. Skills Development – Providing training in gemstone valuation, cutting, polishing, and business entrepreneurship to unemployed youth.
  3. Sustainable Growth – Promoting responsible diamond sourcing and reinvestment in mining towns to prevent economic collapse after mine closures.

3. Key Achievements – May 1991

Despite the short time frame since inception, the partnership has already delivered measurable impact:

  • Education Fund Established – $150,000 allocated to refurbish rural schools in Limpopo and Northern Cape provinces.
  • Vocational Training Launch – First intake of 45 trainees began diamond grading and jewellery manufacturing courses.
  • Healthcare Support – Mobile clinic deployed to Kimberley district, servicing over 1,200 patients in its first month.
  • Women in Trade Program – 12 women entrepreneurs supported with small grants and mentorship to start jewellery-related businesses.

4. Strategic Significance

The partnership represents more than a funding stream—it is a model for socially conscious corporate alliances in a sector traditionally associated with inequality. By embedding social impact into the value chain, Neftaly and SDT are demonstrating that profitability and community upliftment can co-exist.

5. Future Outlook

Planned developments for the next 12 months include:

  • Expansion of mobile health services to reach at least 10,000 individuals annually.
  • Scaling vocational programs to 200 participants per year.
  • Establishing a diamond-cutting cooperative owned by trained graduates.
  • Launching a public transparency report on social reinvestment outcomes.

Closing Statement from the Chief Development Officer
“Partnerships like this remind us that commerce, when guided by conscience, can transform lives. In May 1991, we took the first steps in proving that the sparkle of a diamond can shine brightest in the hearts of the communities from which it comes.”
