A Time I Learned a Traditional Skill from a Community Elder
One of the most memorable experiences in my life was when I learned a traditional skill from an elder in my community. I had the privilege of spending time with an elderly woman who was highly respected for her knowledge of weaving. For many years, she had passed down her wisdom to younger generations, and I was fortunate to sit at her side and learn.
At first, I thought weaving was simply about putting threads together, but she patiently explained that it was an art form tied to our history and identity. She showed me how to prepare the fibers, dye them with natural colors, and use simple tools to create patterns that carried cultural meaning. As I struggled to copy her movements, she encouraged me with gentle words, reminding me that learning requires patience and respect.
The experience taught me more than just the skill itself. It gave me insight into the values of perseverance, attention to detail, and honoring tradition. I realized that elders are not only keepers of knowledge but also bridges between the past and the future. By learning from her, I became part of a chain that connects generations.
That day remains a reminder to me of the importance of listening to our elders and preserving the skills that define who we are as a community.
